M’Goun Summit & Sahara Desert Trek: 10-Day Adventure from Marrakech

The historic buildings and the medina with the souk delight the senses with their
beauty, their lively vibrancy, their contrasts, colors, sounds and smells. Guided tour of
the city in the morning. Orientation for the trip in the afternoon in the riad. The rest
of the day and the evening are at leisure.

In the morning, the minibus takes you from Marrakech eastwards to Azilal and from
there further south into the mighty mountains of the Central High Atlas to Agouti in
the idyllic Aït-Bouguemez valley. There the mule team joins the group. The animals
are loaded. You hike through the fertile valley across fields to the mouth of the
Arouss valley. Ascent to the pastures at Ikissn 'Aurouss.

First a gentle ascent to the end of the Arouss valley. Then first ascent to a small pass.
The second ascent leads along a zig-zag path to the Aghri Pass (3,350m). Lunch on
the way. Descent to the Tarkeddit plateau at the northern foot of the M'Goun range.

(2,800m) In good weather: set off at 4.30 am for the approx. 6-hour ascent to the
M'Goun summit. Last two hours on the ridge. Magnificent views over the mountain
ranges of the High Atlas and to the south. Descent to the camp in the Oulilimte valley
by the river. Picnic on the way. Alternatively: with the accompanying team on the
equally beautiful route at the northern foot of M'Goun.

Gentle hike through the Oulilimte valley on paths in stone slopes, past bizarre rock
formations, in the river bed and over hills with spiky bushes to the high plateau at
Aflafal, slightly above the river. Lunch and siesta at the camp.

In the morning, it's time to say goodbye to the mighty mountains of the High Atlas.
Travel south by minibus via Tizi n'ait Hamd, where you will have lunch. Overnight stay
in a guesthouse in Ouarzazat.

After breakfast, we drive south by minibus through the beautiful Drâa Valley, through
old villages and past palm oases to Zagora, the meeting point with the escort team
and the dromedaries. We start our trekking tour after Pik-Nik. At the beginning, we
climb about 400 meters up to the Oumlaachar Pass. From there we descend. On this
day we will only hike in the stony desert and at the castle we will reach an oasis.

After breakfast, it's time to apply sunscreen... Then off we go. Today we cycle along
the Oued Lamhasser river. The stage is varied: we start in the stony desert, then come
to the Oued Lmahasser gorge. If it has rained beforehand, the frogs will sing a
symphony. After about 2 hours of hiking, we always take a “nut break”. Then we
continue to the camp.

Today is the first long stage of our trek. In the morning we will walk the last stretch in
the stony desert.
