Mgoun Massif & Tassaout Valley Trek: 6-Day Ait Bougmez to Megdaz Adventure
Overview
This spectacular 6-day trekking adventure takes travelers deep into the heart of Morocco’s Central High Atlas Mountains, combining the lush beauty of the Ait Bougmez Valley, known as the “Happy Valley,” with the dramatic landscapes of the Mgoun Massif and the remote cultural treasures of the Tassaout Valley. Beginning with scenic transfers through mountain passes and fertile valleys, the journey leads trekkers across traditional Berber villages, terraced fields, shepherd settlements, and high-altitude plateaus beneath the majestic summit of Mount Mgoun. Along the route, participants cross breathtaking mountain passes such as Tarkedit and Sdremt, encounter nomadic communities, and discover some of Morocco’s most remarkable mountain architecture, including the UNESCO-recognized village of Megdaz. This trek offers an exceptional combination of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and adventurous mountain exploration, making it perfect for hikers seeking an authentic and unforgettable High Atlas experience.
Tour Plan
Transfer to the Ait Bougmez Valley. Lunch in Azilal, the gateway to the Central High Atlas, before continuing to the Oughbar Pass (2200 m), then descending into the Ait Abbas Valley and reaching Agouti, the first village of the “Happy Valley.” Overnight in a local guesthouse.

For this first trekking day, we leave the guesthouse and follow paths through fields and orchards across the Ait Bougmez Valley, passing villages such as Ait Ziri, Idekalen, and Agouti. We ascend the Arouss valley and discover traditional rammed-earth (pisé) architecture. Arrival at Azib N’Ikkis (shepherd shelters), where we explore pastoral life and admire stunning landscapes. Overnight in tents.

Ascent to Tarkedit Pass (3400 m) with beautiful views over the mountain range and the summit of Mgoun (4068 m). Then descend to the Tarkedit plateau, frequented by nomads.

After about one hour of walking on the plateau, we climb through rocky terrain to reach Sdremt Pass, offering views over the Tassaout Valley, one of the largest valleys in the Central High Atlas. We descend to have lunch near the first village, Tassgaiwalte, then continue through the valley to reach the shepherd shelter of Imin Ikkis (2100 m).

We descend the Tassaout Valley through beautiful villages such as Ichbbaken and Ait Hamza, arriving at Ait Ali N’Itto (1800 m). Then we turn left and climb a small valley to reach Megdaz village, which is worth visiting for its remarkable architecture and is recognized by UNESCO. Overnight in tents.

Departure at 8:00 AM. After about 3 hours of walking, we reach the village of Fakhour via Ait Alla. Our final meal in nature is prepared by the cook under large walnut trees. In the afternoon, transfer back to Marrakech via the natural bridge of Imi N’Ifri, then continuation to Marrakech.
