Djebel Saghro Trek in 5 Days
Overview
Discover the Saghro Trek in Morocco over 5 days, an immersive hiking adventure in southern Morocco exploring the pre-Saharan massif of Saghro. Djebel Saghro captivates visitors with its unique geology, offering a stunning diversity of landscapes: vast rugged plateaus, towering cliffs, deep gorges, sharp peaks, majestic rock towers, and flat-topped escarpments where camel caravans move gracefully. The gorges are dotted with shrubs and conglomerate monoliths, enhancing the wild beauty of this region.
Immerse yourself in a world bathed in warm light, where the southern wind whispers that the Sahara is near. From September to May, this exceptional region in southern Morocco opens its doors, nestled between the Valley of Roses and the Draa Oasis, just before the vast desert expanses.
In a landscape flooded with golden light, the southern wind reminds us how close the Sahara is. From September to May, we invite you to discover a magnificent region in southern Morocco: the Saghro massif, located south of the Valley of Roses, the last mountain range before the Draa Valley and its oasis, and the vast desert areas beyond.
The Djebel Saghro massif, volcanic and imposing with its 2,712 meters, reveals lunar-like landscapes of striking beauty: arid plateaus, jagged peaks, and deep canyons. It is also the transhumance land of the Aït Atta tribe, who set up their nomadic tents here and graze their goat herds, adding a sense of life and authenticity to this wild and grand environment.
Tour Plan
Early departure toward Ouarzazate via the Tizi N’Tichka Pass. After discovering the Dades Valley and its thousand kasbahs, we continue south across a desert plateau to the village of Tagdilt. Overnight stay with a local family at 1,650 m.
At the start of the trek, we watch the mules being loaded. After crossing a vast plateau, we begin the ascent to Tizi N’Iferd Pass (2,400 m), offering beautiful views of the Central High Atlas. We then descend toward the Iferd Plateau. Camp is set up on a plateau often visited by semi-nomadic Aït Atta transhumants. Overnight in tents at 2,250 m.
Walking time: about 5.5 hours.
We begin a beautiful climb to the summit of Kouaouch (2,600 m), a non-technical ascent. Our cook brings a picnic lunch. Descent via Tassegdilt. Overnight camping in Igli at 1,700 m.
Walking time: about 5.5 hours.
Crossing the Tadaout N’Tablah plateau, at the heart of a rocky cirque with surreal landscapes. We then reach the famous Bab N’Ali (1,416 m), a site of sculpted rock pinnacles formed from Precambrian metamorphic sandstone, creating spectacular and massive shapes. The two main rock towers form a kind of giant “gate” (Bab). Overnight in tents.
Walking time: about 5 hours.
After thanking our mule team, we met our driver for the transfer via a road leading to the town of Nkob. Then continue through the Draa Valley and the town of Agdez before crossing the Tichka Pass. Lunch after the pass. Return to Marrakech in the afternoon.
